Magna International has reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with Mercedes-Benz, celebrating over four decades of collaboration. Since 1979, Magna’s assembly plant in Graz, Austria, has produced more than 500,000 units of Mercedes-Benz’s iconic off-roader.
This partnership spans a broad range of development and manufacturing areas, including powertrain, ADAS, electrification, interiors, chassis components, and full vehicle assembly.
“Strong partnerships with our customers are essential for driving innovation and advancing the automotive industry,” said Eric Wilds, Magna’s Chief Strategy and Commercial Officer. “Our continued collaboration with Mercedes-Benz shows how working together can create groundbreaking technologies and lasting success.”
Next Phase of Collaboration: eDS Duo System
In 2024, the collaboration took a new step with the production of the eDS Duo—a next-gen dual-motor electric drive system—at Magna’s Lannach facility in Austria. This advanced power unit now drives the latest all-electric version of the legendary Mercedes-Benz off-roader.
“After supplying three generations of transfer cases for this vehicle, we are proud to now provide its first fully electric powertrain,” said Diba Ilunga, President of Magna Powertrain. “The eDS Duo showcases Magna’s ability to bridge combustion and electric mobility seamlessly.”

eDS Duo: Performance and Off-Road Capabilities
The eDS Duo is a 2-speed, dual e-motor system capable of delivering up to 240 kW of power. It provides exceptional off-road capabilities through a wheel-individual propulsion system, including the impressive “G-Turn” feature, allowing 360-degree rotation in place.
Equipped with silicon carbide tech and decoupling features, the eDS Duo maximizes both performance and efficiency—demonstrating Magna’s push for cutting-edge, sustainable automotive solutions.
